Meet the Band
Three musicians. A lot of experience. And one shared obsession with a great live show.
A Powerhouse Trio
About Last Night brings together three professional musicians from very different corners of the South African music industry, and that is exactly what makes the band work.
Between them, Gerhard Oosthuizen, Jonathan Peyper and Wian Joubert have spent years performing at weddings and corporate events, touring internationally, recording original music, working in theatre and large-scale productions, performing alongside major artists and collaborating with orchestras.
On paper, their musical backgrounds are impressive. On stage, none of that matters unless the dance floor is full. That balance lies at the heart of About Last Night.
This is a band made up of musicians who take the music seriously without taking themselves too seriously. Every performance combines accomplished musicianship with the instinct that only comes from years of playing to real crowds. Knowing when to change direction, when to push the energy, when to let a moment breathe and when to play the song everybody suddenly realises they know every word to.
The result is a live show that isn’t rigidly scripted around a predetermined set list. Every audience is different, and the band responds accordingly.
From weddings and private celebrations to conferences, gala dinners and major corporate events, About Last Night has built its reputation around creating experiences rather than simply providing background entertainment.
And increasingly, that philosophy is taking the band beyond the traditional event stage through concepts such as Take the Mic, their interactive Live Band Karaoke experience, and Dancefloor Symphony, which combines the energy of a party band with the scale and drama of orchestral musicians.
Three musicians. A lot of experience. And one shared obsession with a great live show.
The Trio
Three accomplished musicians dedicated to delivering exceptional live sound and genuine audience connection.
Gerhard Oosthuizen
Gerhard has spent more than 16 years working in South Africa’s wedding, corporate event and live entertainment industry.
As co-founder of The Morning After and later founder of About Last Night, he has performed at hundreds of weddings and events and developed an instinct for something that can’t really be taught in a rehearsal room, how to read a crowd.
Part bassist, part vocalist, part frontman and occasionally part professional troublemaker, Gerhard’s role extends well beyond playing the songs.
His background in event coordination means he understands the moving parts behind a successful function as well as what happens on stage. From the timing of formalities to the transition into the party, he knows how entertainment fits into the bigger event rather than existing separately from it.
Over the years, Gerhard has also performed with South African artists including Snotkop and Die Kat se Snor. Today, he is the driving force behind About Last Night’s growing range of live entertainment concepts, including Take the Mic and Dancefloor Symphony.
On stage, however, the job remains wonderfully simple:
Find the crowd. Find the song. Start the party.
Jonathan Peyper
Jonathan Peyper started playing guitar at 12 and was performing alongside accomplished musicians while most teenagers were still figuring out their first few chords.
At 17, he performed with acclaimed South African blues guitarist Dan Patlansky, helping ignite what would become a lifelong love of Blues Rock. Jonathan went on to graduate with distinction from COPA Pretoria in 2011 before establishing himself as a recording artist in his own right. His debut live Blues Rock album was released in 2014 and received international recognition, followed by his second album, Saltation, in 2021, produced by Dan Patlansky.
His career has also taken him onto international stages, including performances in Dubai and major tribute productions with Showtime Australia, covering music from artists as varied as AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Neil Diamond, Eagles, Deep Purple, Taylor Swift, Bryan Adams, Bob Marley and Lenny Kravitz.
That range makes Jonathan an ideal fit for About Last Night. He can move from a subtle melodic guitar part to a full-throttle rock solo without missing a beat and possesses the kind of musical vocabulary that allows the band to jump confidently between genres throughout the night.
If About Last Night has a little extra rock ’n roll in its DNA, Jonathan may have something to do with it.
Wian Joubert
Wian Joubert is the kind of drummer whose CV makes you wonder when exactly he finds time to sleep. A professional session drummer and percussionist, Wian has built a career spanning pop, rock, theatre, orchestral music and large-scale live productions.
He achieved Trinity Grade 8 Drumkit with distinction and has performed with an extensive list of acclaimed artists including Miriam Makeba, Elvis Blue, Danny K, Lira, Zakes Bantwini, Just Jinger and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse.
His career has also included the extraordinary opportunity to perform as drummer for internationally renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli. Wian has toured internationally with Zain Bhikha and performed in major theatrical productions including Rock of Ages, The Rocky Horror Show, Buddy Holly, The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. His orchestral work includes performances with ensembles such as the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as productions including Starlight Classics and Disney100.
He is also closely involved in the orchestral world as a conductor, arranger and Acting CEO of the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company. That combination of orchestral precision and live-band instinct makes Wian an essential part of the About Last Night sound and one of the creative forces behind Dancefloor Symphony.
Every great party needs a heartbeat. We have Wian.
